The expected lifespan is approximately 8–10 years, although actual service life can vary depending on installation, drainage, moisture exposure, environmental conditions, maintenance and intended use.
These sleepers are supplied as UC3 treated timber and should not be confused with UC4 ground-contact sleepers. Where a project specifically requires a timber product designed for permanent ground contact, an appropriate UC4-treated product should be selected.
The sleepers are supplied with a green pressure-treated appearance that will naturally weather when exposed to sunlight and rain. Over time, the colour can change through lighter green and brown tones towards honey brown and eventually silvery grey.
If you want to maintain or alter the colour, a suitable exterior timber stain or preservative can be applied in accordance with the manufacturer's recommendations.
If a sleeper is cut to length, newly exposed timber surfaces should be treated with an appropriate wood preservative to help maintain protection to the cut areas.
As natural softwood products, individual sleepers will vary in appearance. Knots, splits, wanes, colour variation and differences in grain are natural characteristics of timber and should be expected. Actual dimensions may vary slightly from the stated sizes.
