Product Description
Brown treated timber railway sleepers are a versatile and attractive choice for garden landscaping, DIY projects and professional landscape gardening. Ideal for creating raised beds, lawn and border edging, retaining walls, garden steps and other outdoor features, these rough sawn softwood sleepers combine a traditional timber appearance with practical pressure-treated protection. The rich brown finish works particularly well in both contemporary and traditional gardens, providing a natural contrast against lawns, planting, paving and gravel.
Manufactured from sustainably sourced softwood, these timber sleepers offer a cost-effective alternative to oak and other hardwood sleepers while providing the strength and versatility needed for a wide range of landscaping projects. The range includes 1.2m, 2.4m and 3m lengths, together with a larger 2.4m x 240mm x 120mm sleeper for projects where a more substantial timber section is preferred. Supplied individually, they give DIY gardeners and landscape professionals the flexibility to purchase the quantity and sizes required for each project.
All sleepers in this range are brown pressure treated to UC3, with preservative treatment designed to penetrate into the timber and help protect against rot and decay. They have an expected lifespan of approximately 8–10 years, depending on installation, drainage, environmental exposure, maintenance and use. The brown finish will naturally weather over time, changing towards honey brown and eventually silvery grey if left untreated.

Ideal for Garden Landscaping & DIY
Timber sleepers are a popular landscaping material because they can be used to create clear, defined levels and boundaries throughout the garden. Use them to build raised vegetable beds and flower beds, create attractive lawn edging, separate planting areas or form retaining structures on sloping ground.
For DIY gardeners, sleepers provide an easy way to transform an outdoor space using a relatively simple and adaptable material. They can be incorporated alongside paving, gravel, turf, planting and other landscaping products to create everything from small garden improvements to larger garden makeovers.
Landscape gardeners can also use the different sleeper lengths to create bespoke designs, with longer sleepers helping to reduce the number of joints in larger borders, beds and retaining structures.

Sizes Available
1.2m x 200mm x 100mm Brown Timber Sleeper
A compact sleeper size that is particularly useful for smaller raised beds, garden borders and edging projects. The shorter length can also make these sleepers easier to handle when working on a DIY garden project. Brown pressure treated UC3 with an approximate weight of 10–15kg.
2.4m x 200mm x 100mm Brown Timber Sleeper
A versatile general-purpose landscaping sleeper suitable for larger raised beds, borders, retaining walls and garden construction. At 2.4m long, it provides a useful balance between coverage and handling. Brown pressure treated UC3 with an approximate weight of 28kg.
3m x 200mm x 100mm Brown Timber Sleeper
The longest standard sleeper in this range, making it particularly useful for long garden borders, raised beds, edging and retaining wall projects where fewer joints are desirable. Brown pressure treated UC3 with an approximate weight of 35–40kg.
2.4m x 240mm x 120mm Large Brown Railway Sleeper
A larger-section sleeper designed for landscaping projects where a more substantial timber profile is required. Its increased dimensions make it particularly suitable for larger raised beds, retaining structures, garden features and substantial landscaping projects. Brown pressure treated UC3 with an approximate weight of 35–40kg.
Treatment & Expected Lifespan
These brown timber sleepers are UC3 pressure treated, making them suitable for appropriate landscaping applications where timber requires protection against moisture, rot and decay.
The pressure treatment process helps drive preservative into the timber, providing greater protection than untreated softwood. The expected lifespan is approximately 8–10 years, although actual service life will depend on factors including installation method, drainage, exposure to moisture, environmental conditions, maintenance and intended use.
Important: UC3-treated sleepers should not be marketed as a UC4 ground-contact product. Where a project specifically requires timber designed for permanent ground contact, a suitable UC4-treated sleeper should be selected.
Timber Appearance & Maintenance
The brown pressure-treated finish gives these sleepers a warm, natural appearance when new. With exposure to sunlight and changing weather conditions, the colour will gradually weather towards honey brown and eventually silvery grey.
If you prefer to retain the original brown appearance, a suitable exterior wood stain or timber preservative can be applied in accordance with the product manufacturer's recommendations.
If a sleeper is cut to length, any newly exposed timber surfaces should be treated with an appropriate wood preservative to help maintain protection to the cut areas.
As natural softwood products, every sleeper will have its own individual appearance. Colour variation, knots, splits, wanes and differences in grain are natural characteristics of timber and should be expected rather than considered defects. Actual dimensions may also vary slightly from the stated measurements.

Why Choose Brown Timber Sleepers?
Brown timber sleepers provide a practical way to add structure, height and definition to a garden while retaining the natural character of timber. Their darker brown finish can blend particularly well with bark, soil, planting and natural stone, making them a popular choice for garden makeovers.
From a simple raised vegetable bed to a substantial sleeper retaining wall, the different sizes in this range give home gardeners and professional landscapers plenty of options for creating bespoke outdoor spaces. Their individual supply also makes it easier to order only the sleepers needed for your project.
