GT Turf Reinforcement Mesh TR3 is a 430gsm permanent turf reinforcement mesh designed to protect existing lawns, grass areas and turf surfaces from wear, rutting, mud and surface damage caused by regular pedestrian and light traffic. Manufactured from extruded high-density polyethylene (HDPE) containing recycled plastic, TR3 reinforces the grass by allowing the grass swards and roots to grow through and intertwine with the mesh filaments. This creates a strong interlock that helps distribute loads across the grass surface while helping protect the underlying root structure.

TR3 turf reinforcement mesh provides a fast and cost-effective solution for reinforcing existing grass without the need for soil removal or excavation. It is particularly suited to grass paths, garden walkways, lawns, dog runs, pedestrian routes, wheelchair access paths, nature trails, play areas and other frequently used grass surfaces. Its slip-resistant mesh structure can provide additional surface grip, with a thin layer of sand suitable for applications where increased traction is required.

As the grass grows through and establishes around the mesh, TR3 becomes increasingly unobtrusive and can blend into the surrounding lawn or landscape. This makes it an excellent option where additional grass protection and surface stability are required while retaining a natural green appearance. TR3 is designed for permanent use and is particularly suitable for existing grass on heavy clay and loam soils, subject to appropriate ground conditions, drainage, installation and traffic levels.

How TR3 Turf Reinforcement Mesh Works

TR3 works by allowing grass swards and roots to grow through the openings and intertwine with the mesh filaments. As the grass establishes, it creates an interlocking relationship between the turf reinforcement mesh and the grass root system, helping distribute loads more evenly across the surface.

The reinforced grass surface provides additional support at the top of the ground, helping reduce abrasion and wear caused by regular pedestrian, bicycle and light traffic. Over time, the growing grass can conceal much of the mesh, allowing the reinforced area to retain a natural lawn or grass appearance.

Installation Guidance

TR3 is designed for straightforward installation over a suitable existing grass surface. Roll the turf reinforcement mesh directly over the prepared grass and secure it firmly using suitable Turf U-Pins. The installation method avoids the need for soil removal or excavation, making it a practical option for existing lawns, pathways and landscaped areas.

Once installed, the grass needs sufficient time to grow through and establish around the mesh. This establishment period is important to achieving the intended reinforcement of the finished surface. Avoid trafficking the area too early, as premature use can cause sinking, bumps, grass damage or movement of the mesh.

For best results, the grass should generally have been mown at least three times before the reinforced area is brought into regular use. Where additional grip or traction is required, a thin layer of sand can be applied over the mesh.

Performance and longevity depend on the condition of the existing ground, soil type, drainage, traffic frequency and correct installation. TR3 is particularly suitable for existing grass on heavy clay and loam soils where the underlying ground is stable and appropriately drained.
