Product Description
Sowing Rate: 5kg per acre | 20kg bag covers approximately 4 acres
The Herbal Ley Overseeding – Legume & Herb Only Seed Mix 20kg is a specialist grass-free herbal ley overseeding seed mixture designed to introduce legumes and herbs into an existing grass sward. The recommended sowing rate is 5kg per acre, with one 20kg bag providing approximately 4 acres of coverage at the recommended rate.
This specialist legume and herb-only seed mix contains 13 species, comprising 9 legumes and 4 herbs, including Red Clover, White Clover, Berseem Clover, Sainfoin, Lucerne, Crimson Clover, Vetch, Sweet Yellow Blossom Clover and Yellow Trefoil, together with Sheep's Parsley, Ribwort Plantain, Burnet and Yarrow.
Unlike a complete herbal ley seed mixture containing grasses, this product is specifically formulated as a grass-free component for overseeding into an existing grass sward. The established grass therefore provides the grass element of the resulting herbal ley, while this mixture introduces additional legume and herb diversity.
With a stated flowering period of approximately April to October, the mixture provides a diverse flowering component within the established sward. The legumes also contribute to the productive forage element and are intended to support reduced reliance on inorganic fertiliser as part of a legume-rich grassland system.
Schemes
- GS4 – Legume and Herb-rich Swards
- SAM3 – Herbal Ley
- CSAM3 – Herbal Ley
This mixture is formulated as a grass-free legume and herb component for overseeding into existing grass.
For SFI26 CSAM3, the resulting established herbal ley must meet the current action requirements. This product does not contain grass seed, so the existing grass sward provides the grass component when used for overseeding.
Always check the current requirements applying to your specific SFI or Countryside Stewardship agreement before sowing, as scheme specifications and establishment requirements may change.

This is a grass-free seed mixture designed for overseeding into an existing grass sward. It is not intended to establish as a complete grass-free ley on its own.
The existing grass component is therefore important when using this product to establish a herbal ley. Farmers, landowners and land managers should ensure that the resulting sward meets the requirements of the relevant scheme or agreement.
For SFI26 CSAM3, current government guidance requires the established herbal ley to contain, as a minimum, one grass species, two legume species and two herb or wildflower species. This product supplies the legume and herb component but contains no grass seed, meaning the existing grass sward provides the grass component when used for overseeding.
For GS4, government guidance describes legume and herb-rich swards and recommends a diverse mixture of grasses, legumes and herbs. The precise requirements applicable to an individual agreement should be checked before establishment.
Grass-Free Herbal Ley Overseeding
For farmers looking to diversify an existing grass sward, this 20kg legume and herb seed mix provides a straightforward way of introducing a broad selection of legumes and herbs without adding additional grass seed.
The 13-species formulation combines 9 legumes and 4 herbs, giving the resulting sward a diverse flowering and forage component. It is particularly relevant to agricultural grassland where the objective is to develop a legume and herb-rich herbal ley while retaining the existing grass component.
The product is well suited to farmers, livestock farmers, landowners, estates, land consultants, agronomists and environmental land managers sourcing specialist seed for grassland diversification and environmental land management.
