Our Clay Soil Wildflower Plug Plants Mix is a professionally curated selection of UK native wildflower plug plants, specifically chosen to thrive in heavy, water-retentive clay soils. Designed for use across farms, estates, parks, gardens, highways, council land and ecological restoration projects, this mix delivers reliable, long-term results where wildflower seed mixes often struggle.
Supplied as pre-grown plug plants, this mix offers faster and more dependable establishment than sowing seed, providing immediate visual impact alongside long-term ecological benefits. Clay soils are prone to seasonal extremes—remaining wet and compacted in winter before drying, cracking and hardening in summer. The species included in this mix are naturally adapted to cope with these challenging conditions, resulting in resilient plants that require minimal maintenance once established.
Each plug is grown in a 40cc cell, promoting strong root development and excellent transplant success. Once planted, the mix develops into a colourful, naturalistic wildflower display with a succession of blooms from June through to September, supporting bees, butterflies and other pollinating insects while enhancing biodiversity across the site.
Plug plants can be planted individually for targeted schemes or grouped together to create meadows, margins, verges, pollinator corridors and wildlife habitats. This makes them particularly suitable for land managers, councils and contractors seeking year-round ecological value, compliance with biodiversity objectives and dependable establishment on difficult soils.
A minimum of 10 native species is selected in equal proportions from a wider species list that may include Oxeye Daisy, Meadow Buttercup, Common Knapweed, Birdsfoot Trefoil, Yarrow, Ragged Robin and Devilsbit Scabious. Species selection may vary depending on seasonal availability to ensure plants are supplied healthy and at the optimum planting stage.
